THAT parent?
that is the question, that has been poppin' up in this ol' brain for the past several days.
pop-up #1:
me: wes. if you aren't down from there when i get to 3, you're goin' to time-out. one, two...
pop-up #2:
scene: spring concert at school. outside. hundreds of parents, and others. on a hill, above the amphitheatre, sittin' in lawn chairs and lying on blankets. lori, forrest, laney, scottie, me, wes and my neighbor are at the top of the hill in the back row.
me: maddie, make sure you read your scriptures slow and clearly, so everyone understands what you're sayin'.
maddie: i know. i know. but that's kinda hard to do when your heart is beatin' in your throat. i'm already shakin'.
me: ahhh. okay, then i won't scream at you before you start talkin'.
maddie: don't you dare. you'll embarrass me, and i'll throw-up, and i won't be able to talk.
me: okay. you've made your case. i won't scream at you while you're doin' your solo part.
(some thirty minutes later...solo part over, will just finished his part. maddie's class just finished the first of a three-song repertoire. applause has died down, and we're all waitin' for the music to start, again.)
me: "go maddie!" (at the top of my lungs)
maddie: (well, she didn't say anything, right away. just envision her face as red as...the color of this bag of kettle corn i'm downin' right this second.) oh, i know. you can't see it. you big baby. you know what red looks like. just envision it.
performance is over...
me: you did awesome, mad!
maddie: why did you do that?
me: what?
maddie: no one else's parents yelled their name out from the back row, when it was dead quit.
me: oh, that's just great. you're mad at me because none of the other parents love their children?
maddie: ughhhh.
random pics from concert:

(that little girl's name is riley. she better step off my boy. just kiddin'. she's adorable. but, really, take a few steps to the right, please.)
pop-up #3:
scene:
will has already been put to bed, but comes downstairs, anyway.
will: daddy, can i have a drink of water?
scottie: you are not down here for a drink of water.
will: uh-huh. i'm thirsty.
scottie: no, you're not. you came down here because you wanted to make sure i put your "tech deck" in your back-pack for tomorrow.
will: no. i'm thirsty.
scottie: didn't i tell you i would put it in your backpack?
will: yes.
scottie: okay, now go back to bed. i love you.
will: love you. (wait for it) hey, how did you know i wasn't really thirsty?
f.y.i. (these are tech deck's:) who knew?)

so, there you have 'em. these are just three of the examples i had pop-up over the past few days. so, i suppose i should give 'em a little thought.
1: do i want to be THAT parent? you know. the parent that likes to prove they can count to 3 on demand? hmmm. i don't know.
2. do i want to be THAT parent? you know. the parent that gets a kick out of embarrasin' their kid? but, they like to think they're doin' it because they love 'em. and they want them to have a good sence of humor. and to remind them that they really do care? hmmm. i don't know.
3. do i want to be THAT parent? you know. the parent that is always provin' they really do have eyes in the back of their head? and that you can't pull the rug over their eyes? hmmm. i don't know.
okay, i've given 'em some thought. and, i have come to this conclusion...the question is actually null and void. apparently, i am THAT parent. i guess the real question is, "do i want to STAY that parent?" hmmmmm. i think so.:0
can't leave wes out...

(she's such a princess. he's such a snot.)
